Share the Love: Giving Back

Your wedding is going to rank right up there as one of the most mega-fantastic days of your entire life. I mean, when else do you get to be the center of attention and have a perfectly good excuse to splurge on anything and everything? Sounds pretty good to me! But what many of us don’t realize is that weddings are also an often untapped opportunity to share the love with others less fortunate than us. Talk about an incredible feeling – knowing that the most special day in your life can be special to so many others as well! And the best part, it’s so simple – you don’t have to go out of your way to give back. You can give back by simply doing everything you normally would for your wedding day.
That wedding gown that makes you feel like an A-list celeb? What if you could buy a gown created by the top designers (I’m talking the likes of Vera here) at a super discount – the gown you’ve always been dreaming of – and give back to women in need at the same time? Win-win! Heart-warming organizations like Brides Against Breast Cancer and Dresses That Heal use the proceeds from gown sales to help women with breast cancer. And all you have to do is buy your wedding dress! The best part? Even if you don’t buy your gown from the organization, you can still donate your gown to it after your wedding day. The proceeds from the sale of your gown will then be used to help women with breast cancer, and the cycle of love continues!
Have you considered what you’re going to do with all the gorge flower arrangements you spent hours mulling over with your (perhaps slightly less enthused) fiancé? Let others delight in your meticulous attention to detail by donating the flower arrangements to a nursing home after your wedding day! Hey, you spent all that time picking your flowers, they might as well bring others as much joy as they bring you. And when it comes to your food, chances are your caterer is going to make a tad extra for your reception dinner, especially if you’re having a buffet. Don’t throw out all that leftover food – donate it! There are organizations like New York’s City Harvest that will pick up your leftovers to feed the hungry – all you have to do is arrange for when the truck arrives. Easy!
You can even give back with your wedding favors – in lieu of the traditional adorable little favor, you can choose to make a donation to your favorite charity and leave a little card by each guest’s plate letting them know that a donation has been made in their name. But hey, giving back doesn’t just mean to other people – it’s about doing good in any way. Consider giving back to Mother Earth with an eco-friendly wedding favor, such as seed packets (all gussied up for a wedding, of course!).
So if you’re looking to give back with your wedding, there really are so many options to spread the love you and your fiancé are feeling on your most special day. Whether it’s where you buy your gown or donating the leftover food, even just a little goes a long way!
