You’ll have incredible photos for memories of your amazing day and your guests will have wedding favors to remember it long after the last piece of the delicious cake you so carefully chose has been eaten. But what about that perfect wedding dress of yours? What comes of the hours upon hours you spent pouring over websites and running in and out of dressing rooms to find your dream gown? There are a few choices available as to what will become of your wedding dress – it’s just up to you decide!

Sell It If you maybe spent just a little too much dough on your wedding, selling your wedding gown is a great way to put some cash back in your pocket. Plus, it gives other brides who might be looking for some less expensive options an amazing opportunity to find gorgeous gowns they can afford. Of course, there is always the go-to online resource for selling everything under the sun (aka, ebay), but there are actually websites out there dedicated specifically to selling wedding gowns to give your dress a whole new life! PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com and RecycledBride.com are just two of the several options available to you – so log on, look up some sites, and share the love your wedding gown brought to you!

Donate It Pay the happiness forward! Another wonderful option you have is to donate your wedding gown to an organization that will sell it for you and donate the proceeds to a worthy cause. Brides Against Breast Cancer is just one such option, where they donate the proceeds of your gown sale to grant last wishes to women with terminal breast cancer. The sale of your dress can allow a mother to take her kids on one last family vacay, and all you had to do was donate your wedding gown!

Trash The Dress Trash the Dress photo sessions are an incredible photo op for you and your groom. After the wedding day, when it no longer matters if your gown gets a few grass stains or ends up soaking wet, schedule a session with your photog to take those artsy photos you’d never dream of taking before your walk down the aisle. Having a wedding on the beach or by a lake? Throw your wedding gown back on after the wedding day (and have your groom put on his dapper suit) and dive in to the water! If there’s a dock, you can take that memorable photo of the two of you jumping off hand in hand, or grab a photo of you kissing out in the sea. If you’re landlocked, head to a park where you can get down and dirty with beautiful photos lying in the grass. The possibilities are endless, and the photos are unforgettable.

Preserve It Let’s face it, your wedding gown is pretty sentimental, and if thoughts of parting ways with it spurs an emotional crisis, preserve it! You can pull out your wedding gown anytime for an instant smile, and you can give your daughter the option of wearing it one day, too. Country-singing cutie Miranda Lambert wore her mother’s gown on her wedding day, adding her own personal style to boot – with some cowboy boots! Check out the Association of Wedding Gown Specialists to learn how to care for your gown and to find a specialist near you to help you preserve it. If you do it the right way, you and your gown will live a long and happy life together.

Lots (and lots) of thought goes into the look for your wedding ceremony and reception. But brides, it’s time to sit down with that handsome groom of yours and discuss a design aspect other than your flowers and centerpieces – you need to decide on your chairs! Sure, it may not seem like that big of a deal, but there’s more to consider than just having enough chairs for everyone to sit comfortably. Chairs can add a whole new dimension to your wedding décor and overall look!

If you’re renting your wedding chairs, you have an abundance of choices. One of the most common chairs brides use in weddings is Chiavari chairs, and it’s not hard to see why. Classic and pretty, these chairs can be done in different colors to match your wedding theme. Plus, because they are simple yet elegant, you can save some moolah by using the same chairs for the ceremony and the reception without having to do anything to change their look in the process (sounds good to me!). White folding chairs are also a great option if you’re having an outdoor wedding, particularly in a garden setting. They’re clean and simple, and the bright white just says “wedding!” You can also gussy them up with sheer ribbons and bows in your wedding colors to add some more color to you décor, particularly in the ceremony.

However, if your chairs are provided by your venue, chair covers may come into play. Nothing against ballroom weddings of course (they’re stunning!), but the chairs hotels provide aren’t always as fabulous. Chair covers are the perfect solution! You can do chair covers in wedding white or ivory, add colorful embellishments like bows to them, or even do the chair covers in a bright color to make a splash with your décor! Chair sleeves (or caps) are another chic option – these cover just the tops of your chairs, adding a hint of color or style without adding too much. And one of the best parts of chair covers – short or long – is that you can customize them in anyway you want. If you’re a bride with a more funky or eclectic style, show it off with your chair covers! You can have ruffles, feathers, sparkles and even have a pattern that matches your wedding gown (no joke!). Check out L.A. based Wildflower Linen for some inspiration – I bet you never knew all the fab things you could do with your chairs!

But, if you already have a lot of décor going on and want other aspects of your wedding to get more attention, you can make your chairs simply disappear by renting crystal flex chairs. These chairs are clear, so that when you walk into your reception or see the wedding pics, you won’t even notice them!

Of course, once you’ve decided on your wedding chairs, you need a way to show your guests to their seats – adorable chair place card holders are just the thing. You can find place card holders that look like your lovely Chiavari chairs, or go beachy for a wedding in the sand with Adirondack chair place card holders. Super cute, and so apropos!

Now that you’ve uncovered all the amazing options out there for your wedding chairs and covers, you can make the best choice to enhance your wedding style and look. Happy planning!

Soft white sands, a cool breeze and a stunning ocean as your backdrop? Yes, yes and yes (please!). The beach is one of the most beautiful places to have a wedding – and no need to spend a lot of dough on décor – the gorgeous location provides plenty for free! But, to ensure your beach wedding goes off without a hitch, there are some important things to consider that are unique to a wedding in the sand.

The Dress: When you’re running around to all the bridal shops trying to narrow down all those fabulous gowns down to the ONE, consider the fact that you will be getting married outside, in the heat! Satin wedding gowns look gorge, but can also be heavy. Think light and flowy – like lace or organza – when choosing a dress for a beach wedding to avoid glistening your way down the aisle. (J. Crew has a lovely collection perfect for the beach – they’re easy on the eyes and on the wallet!)

The Hair: Weddings on the beach may be the ultimate in casual chic, but you still may want to consider pulling your hair back for the occasion. The closer you get to the water, the windier it’ll be, and you don’t want your hair whipping around in your face when you’re trying to kiss your groom! There are plenty of ways to top off your look with an updo that doesn’t look like it belongs in a formal ballroom setting. Try a low bun or curled ponytail – and make sure your hairdresser uses the super mega strong “this hair wouldn’t dare move an inch” hairspray.

The Makeup: Glowing on your wedding day is one thing, but glistening uncontrollably is another! A beach wedding is not the time to cake on lots of heavy foundation. Consider using airbrush makeup for your wedding day – it gives you that picture-ready complexion while being much lighter and more forgiving under the hot sun.

The Décor: There is plenty of beach-themed wedding décor, and really, what could be more perfect? Consider beach themed place cards, like little flip-flop place card holders or mini Adirondack chairs – they’re super cute and the guests will love the attention to detail! Or send the guests home with a beach-themed wedding favor like starfish shaped cookie cutters – your guests will remember your day everytime they bite into their scrumptious goodies.

The Ceremony: One factor that often gets overlooked is the time of day when the wedding will take place, or more accurately, where exactly the sun will be during your ceremony. Make sure you won’t be directly facing the sun when you say your vows – squinty is just not a good look for wedding pictures!

The Flowers – Think local! If you’re getting married in an exotic tropical location, consider using the flowers local to the region in your bouquets and centerpieces. Not only will they fit right into the setting, but shipping flowers in from another location can end up being a budget-buster, and no one wants that!

The beach is one of the most romantic places to get married, and really, the wedding photos simply can’t be beat. So just remember all the special considerations for a beach wedding to make sure you don’t encounter any unwelcome surprises, and your most special day will be just as perfect as you always dreamed it to be!

Your wedding is going to rank right up there as one of the most mega-fantastic days of your entire life. I mean, when else do you get to be the center of attention and have a perfectly good excuse to splurge on anything and everything? Sounds pretty good to me! But what many of us don’t realize is that weddings are also an often untapped opportunity to share the love with others less fortunate than us. Talk about an incredible feeling – knowing that the most special day in your life can be special to so many others as well! And the best part, it’s so simple – you don’t have to go out of your way to give back. You can give back by simply doing everything you normally would for your wedding day.

That wedding gown that makes you feel like an A-list celeb? What if you could buy a gown created by the top designers (I’m talking the likes of Vera here) at a super discount – the gown you’ve always been dreaming of – and give back to women in need at the same time? Win-win! Heart-warming organizations like Brides Against Breast Cancer and Dresses That Heal use the proceeds from gown sales to help women with breast cancer. And all you have to do is buy your wedding dress! The best part? Even if you don’t buy your gown from the organization, you can still donate your gown to it after your wedding day. The proceeds from the sale of your gown will then be used to help women with breast cancer, and the cycle of love continues!

Have you considered what you’re going to do with all the gorge flower arrangements you spent hours mulling over with your (perhaps slightly less enthused) fiancé? Let others delight in your meticulous attention to detail by donating the flower arrangements to a nursing home after your wedding day! Hey, you spent all that time picking your flowers, they might as well bring others as much joy as they bring you. And when it comes to your food, chances are your caterer is going to make a tad extra for your reception dinner, especially if you’re having a buffet. Don’t throw out all that leftover food – donate it! There are organizations like New York’s City Harvest that will pick up your leftovers to feed the hungry – all you have to do is arrange for when the truck arrives. Easy!

You can even give back with your wedding favors – in lieu of the traditional adorable little favor, you can choose to make a donation to your favorite charity and leave a little card by each guest’s plate letting them know that a donation has been made in their name. But hey, giving back doesn’t just mean to other people – it’s about doing good in any way. Consider giving back to Mother Earth with an eco-friendly wedding favor, such as seed packets (all gussied up for a wedding, of course!).

So if you’re looking to give back with your wedding, there really are so many options to spread the love you and your fiancé are feeling on your most special day. Whether it’s where you buy your gown or donating the leftover food, even just a little goes a long way!

I mean really, do you know any women who are less than completely obsessed with heels or wedges? (Ok, there must be some out there, but I sure haven’t met them!). The only thing I can think of more fun than shopping for the wedding dress is shopping for that oh-so-perfect pair of shoes (or two) for the walk down the aisle.

The best thing about wedding shoes – there are no rules! You can go classic white or ivory to match your gown, or you can find an ah-mazing pair of colorful shoes to show off your fabulous style! I just love the super-cute wedding pics where the bride raises her wedding dress to reveal a splash of colorful heels.

So where to find shoes for your wedding? There are some super handy websites like myglassslipper.com that sell tons of shoes just for weddings in white or ivory, but can dye your shoes any color of the rainbow to put your bright personality on display. But unlike the wedding gown, you don’t have to go to a bridal-specific store or website for shoes. You can go ultra high-end and splurge on some Jimmy Choos (it is your wedding day after all!) or stick to more budget-friendly shoes from any of your favorite stores. Just be sure to bring your shoes to your gown fittings to get your dress to the perfect length – no tripping down the aisle!

Personally, I’m a high heel girl – the higher, the better. But, towering heels may not make the best dancing shoes. An easy solution – wear those sky-high heels for the ceremony (after all, between your father and your new hubby, you’ll always have someone to lean on!), and then kick ‘em off for the reception and slip on some comfy ballet slippers or flip-flops to dance the night away. But (and this is a big but) – if you don’t normally wear heels, your wedding is not the time to start! You don’t want to be uncomfortable, so wear some adorable flats or vintage kitten heels. Blisters are not cute – especially in all the honeymoon pics!

If you’re having a beach wedding, consider flip-flops – or, go barefoot and offer a shoe check for all your friends and fam. Provide a basket with a little sign telling your guests to leave their shoes right before they step in the sand. It makes a fab surprise your guests will love, and they’ll appreciate you sparing their own heels!

Love shoes as much as I do? Bring them into the wedding décor with your wedding favors (seriously!). Talk about a favor that fits your personality! One of my faves is shoe bottle openers – what girl wouldn’t love pulling that out at a party?!

As the eternally beautiful Marilyn Monroe once said, “Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world.” So go out there and find that perfect pair of shoes that shows off your style (and are comfy!) and go conquer your wedding day! Happy shoe shopping!

On the most important day of your life, it’s important to feel confident - from head to toe. Whether you choose to hire a professional make-up artist or do-it-yourself, creating a look that coordinates with your personality, dress, and wedding theme will pull your wedding together.

There are several different make-up tips and tricks you can try for your wedding day. From the understated to the over-the-top, there are a variety of different looks you can fashion.

The Smokey Eye

One of the most popular bridal make-up choices is the always dramatic smokey eye. It provides great contrast to a white bridal gown and gives the bride a romantic and mysterious look. Start by using a primer all over the lid. This will stop your shadow from creasing and smearing throughout your long day. Next, line your as close to the edge of the lid both on the top and bottom of your eyes. Use a sponge applicator or cotton swab to smudge the liner. After, you’ll want to apply a dark shadow to the entire eye lid and under the eye, close to the lash line. Blend well with a bristle brush. Add a good (waterproof) mascara to finish the eyes. The rest of the face can be highlighted with bronzer and a nude lip color or gloss.

The Vintage Look

If you’re planning on hosting a vintage style wedding, or your dress has more of a 50′s flare, consider applying a vintage look to your bridal make-up. This look consists of pale skin, large and dark eyebrows, and a bright lip color. First, apply a concealer and foundation to even out your skin tone, especially under the eyes. Next, fill in eyebrows with a brow pencil or powder. You can apply a simple liner and pink tone eye shadow to your eyes. Next, apply a deep color to the lips, like a red or mauve. If you want to give extra drama without taking away from your lips, try adding fake lashes, so you can bat them at your groom to be.

The Fresh Face

Many brides opt to use very little make-up, keeping the look as close to their own everyday style as possible. This is a very pretty choice, especially for beach or chapel weddings. Simply add a small amount of concealer and foundation to even out your skin tone. Use a liner to line eyes close to the lash line, then slightly smudge with a cotton swab. Apply a coat of mascara and add a blush or bronzer to your cheeks to make you look like the blushing bride you are.

Extra Tips

Always try your full look, from your dress to your hair and make-up, a week prior to the big day. This way you can make any changes needed beforehand and be fully prepared with all the tools when it comes time. You can also ask your bridal party to try their make-up beforehand. Why not host a bridal party spa night, complete with make-up favors for all of the ladies to try? You can create little boxes complete with the items they’ll need to create their look. You might even find it’s cheaper than hiring a make-up artist for the day.

Ah, the pre-wedding jitters. Almost everyone who has every gotten married has been there. Most of the time, pre-wedding nerves are nothing to worry about. This is what you need to know to conquer wedding cold feet.

The first thing to know about getting cold feet before your wedding is that it is no reason to panic. While it is commonly assumed that it is always the groom who gets nervous, it is just as likely for a bride to experience a case of nerves as well. In few cases does it mean that the person is on the brink of calling off the wedding. Most cases of cold feet have more to do with the stress of planning a wedding than they do the relationship itself.

When trying to calm the jitters before tying the knot, the most important question to ask yourself is whether you are worried about your relationship or just the wedding day. In many instances, cold feet are caused by stage fright (all those people watching you walk down the aisle in your gown and wedding jewelry!), stress over conflict with family or bridesmaids, or fear that something will go wrong at the wedding (what if the minister does not show up?). If you come to realize that your nerves are about the event, not the marriage, it should help you to ease your concerns. Remind yourself that the point of the wedding is to celebrate your marriage, and that everything will turn out beautifully.

Sometimes a bride or groom gets hit with a case of cold feet when they stop to think about the enormity of the commitment they are about to make. This is not necessarily a bad thing. After all, getting married is about a lot more than just dressing up in a fancy gown and getting to shop for wedding jewelry – it is a lifelong promise. It is actually more worrisome when the bride or groom does not seem to grasp the magnitude of what they are doing than when they do. As long as your relationship is built on a solid foundation, this type of nervousness will pass. It is only if it lingers that you might have cause for concern.

So when is a case of cold feet something to be taken seriously? Well, certainly if the person starts to act on it. If the groom decides to have one last fling “to make sure his is ready to settle down”, that is definitely a sign that he is not ready to make a real commitment to the marriage. Or if the bride has a panic attack every time she envisions spending the rest of her life with her fiance, that is concerning as well. When either party is truly concerned that the pre-wedding jitters are a sign that the marriage might be a bad idea, it can be wise to seek counseling before taking the plunge.

Happily, most wedding cold feet are nothing too serious. Usually all it takes is a few words of reassurance from a happily married friend (who can probably tell you that they went through the same thing before their wedding). It can also help to take a break from the wedding planning and go on a romantic date or take a weekend trip somewhere. The chances are that you will come back feeling much more at ease, and ready to go get hitched.

You are all excited about the fact that you have accepted your boyfriend’s recent marriage proposal. However, it appears that your family isn’t so thrilled at all about your marriage. What do you do?

The key to working through problems is good communication – which often means listening at least as much as you talk, and making sure that all involved have a chance to air their grievances. It also means that you must truly understand what people are saying to you before you can respond.

First, you need to find out why your family is against your marriage. It’s hard to listen to what they have to say objectively, but it’s really important to keep your emotions in check while your family relays their concerns. Obviously, this can be very difficult to do!

After they offer you their reasons for concern, you need to make a genuine effort to evaluate their opinions to see if there is any validity in them. For example, if they say to you “I just don’t like him,” you may just chalk it up to the fact that they are upset about you moving on with your life. If on the other hand, you get a response like, “I know that he has been married twice before and that he has a long criminal record”, you just might want to seriously consider the issues that your family is raising.

Sometimes, it is also helpful to ask the advice of a close friend in this situation. How does your friend honestly feel about your soon to be husband? When she offers her feelings, also ask her to give examples of why she feels that way. It is important again to listen respectfully and not take the answers personally. You might also want to ask your fiance to read this article on winning over your partner’s friends.

At this point, you might realize that your friends and your family have valid reasons for not liking your husband to be. On the other hand, you might decide that your family and/or friends are upset about something else and directing their frustration at your fiance. Or perhaps they just don’t want you to get married.

If your family continues to be unhappy as you pursue the marriage and you want to continue on in a relationship with them, it might be good to seek counseling. As time goes by, it’s only going to get harder to deal with a family that doesn’t like your fiance – not to mention a fiance that feels threatened by your family. A good counselor can help you find ways to reduce the tension with your family and can also help them to create a relationship with your spouse to be.

When it comes down to it, your choice for a mate is just that – your choice. Your family can voice their opinions, and while you should listen to them objectively and consider them carefully, you are the master of your destiny. The choice is still yours to make after those opinions have been offered.

If your family doesn’t come around to the idea of your marriage, hopefully they are mature enough to accept the fact that people can agree to disagree and still love each other. That love will hopefully be strong enough to also accept your choice and to be happy for you and your future husband. Good luck!

There’s no doubt that planning a honeymoon can put a lot of pressure on a couple. From choosing the destination to planning a budget, vacation planning can be stressful. Invariably, you’ll be asked a hundred times over ‘where are you going on your honeymoon?’ by well-meaning friends and family. You’ll begin to feel as though it’s your duty to impress everyone with your lavish plans. Take a breath! Your honeymoon is for you as a couple and no one else. Relax, read through these top ten honeymoon-planning tips, and have fun with it!

Destination: choose a destination that you will both enjoy. If you’re a shopper and he isn’t, you don’t want to make him spend two weeks antiquing. If he’s a camper and you’re not, do you really want to spend a week in the great outdoors?

Travel agent: use one! An agent can often get you the best deals on airfare, tickets for shows and even accommodations. Remember, a professional may have access to sources that you do not.

Plan ahead: planning a honeymoon can’t be done in a week’s time. Start early to get the best deals.

Travel insurance: perhaps the most overlooked detail of any vacation, travel insurance can protect you from any mishaps during your trip.

Register: very few people know that there are such things as honeymoon registries. By registering, your wedding guests can contribute to your honeymoon in lieu of gifts, saving you a lot of money.

Tickets and passports: if you are leaving for your honeymoon directly after your wedding, your passports and tickets should be purchased in your maiden name. You don’t want to go through the hassle of your ID not matching any official documents, as you won’t have time to get a new ID before you leave.

Budgeting: decide on how much you want to spend and what you want to spend it on. Is your hotel room important to you? If so, use the bulk of your budget for a great suite. If having money for adventurous activities is more important, forego the fancy hotel.

Announce your status: some people don’t like to draw attention to themselves and this is a mistake! Airlines, hotels and even restaurants love to cater to newlyweds; take advantage of it.

Relax: take the first day or two of your honeymoon to just relax. Your wedding will be a big, busy, hectic day. Give yourselves some time to recover before throwing yourselves into honeymoon activities. Do the same at the end of your honeymoon! There’s nothing worse than snorkeling in Hawaii on Sunday and being in the office on Monday.

Itinerary: you’re honeymoon activities don’t have to be set in stone but, with a little bit of research and planning, you won’t feel like you missed something once you’ve gotten home.

Men, are you looking to buy an engagement ring for your girlfriend? Girls, are you recently engaged and going to pick a diamond with your fiancé? If you answered yes to either of those questions then you need my guide to how to buy an engagement ring.

1. Diamonds Aren’t the Only Gems

They may be traditional, but if you simply can’t afford a diamond, there is a whole range of precious stones that you can choose for your ring.

These range from imitation diamonds like cubic zirconia, that give a similar effect at a fraction of the price, to rubies, sapphires, emeralds. If you go the non-traditional route there’s simply loads to choose from!

Choosing a different gem for your engagement ring may be wise if you’re on a tight budget.

2. … But Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend

There’s no denying that diamonds are the number one choice for engagement rings. They have a lovely sparkle, are rare, everlasting and have an undeniable wow factor.

If you do want to stick with tradition, there are some important facts to know and terms to get your head around – you’ll be hearing them a lot.

3. The 4Cs matter

The 4Cs: Cut, clarity, carat and colour. Four words that you will hear over and over again in your hunt for a diamond engagement ring. Diamonds are always graded on their ability to reflect light – the 4Cs has a massive impact on that gorgeous sparkle.

Cut. The way the stone has been cut. The cut affects the shape of the ring – a round brilliant is indeed round, a princess cut is a lovely square shape. But cut is actually a technical term referring to the proportions, number of facets and polish of the diamond.

Clarity. This is a measure of how “perfect” a stone is – a high number of flaws and inclusions will give low clarity. These prevent light from passing through the diamond easily, affecting the gem’s trademark sparkle.

Carat. A measure of the weight (and so size) of the gem. I’m sorry to tell you, but bigger really doesn’t mean better. A smaller gem of higher clarity, with a better cut and colour will ususally be worth more than a high carat diamond with low clarity and poor colour.

Colour. Essentially the whiter the better – a colourless stone of grade D, E or F reflects light more beautifully than a light yellow gem of grade S – Z. That said it’s possible to buy stones known as “fancy diamonds” that have strong colours and are very valuable due to their rarity.

5. Buy a Certified Stone

Always choose a certified diamond: Whether you have the cash to spend on a supremely high quality diamond, or if you prefer a more modest gem for your engagement ring.

You will get a certificate providing you with an independent guarantee of the quality of your diamond when you choose a certified stone. This is important for your own peace of mind and helps to ensure that you don’t get ripped off by an unscrupulous jeweller.

6. White Metals Are A Perfect Complement to Diamonds

In recent years there has been a trend towards using platinum or white gold for engagement rings. And for one good reason: gold bands can cast a colour onto the diamond, which may affect their sparkle. White metals are simply the ideal choice for diamond rings

But, ultimately the metal that you choose for your band is entirely up to you. Whether you like platinum, rose gold or yellow, it’s a personal preference. If you’re happy with the look of the stone against the band then go for it!

The important thing to remember when picking your engagement ring is that there is an endless range of styles out there. The perfect ring is the one that you love that you can afford to buy.

Follow my tips for ensuring that you have a quality ring. But don’t be dictated to about the best engagement ring for you – by your mum, a shop assistant or anyone else offering you advice (yes, that includes me). Good luck!
